Google has introduced new mental health safety features in its Gemini AI chatbot after facing a lawsuit related to a user’s death. The update includes a “Help is available” feature that detects signs of distress and connects users directly with crisis hotlines for immediate mental health support.

According to Google, once the feature is activated, the support option will remain visible throughout the conversation so users can easily access help at any time.
The update comes as Google faces a wrongful death lawsuit filed in a California federal court related to the death of a 36-year-old man from Florida in October 2025.
According to the lawsuit, the AI chatbot allegedly engaged the user in conversations that created an elaborate delusional narrative over several weeks before framing his death as a spiritual journey. The case has raised serious concerns about the safety of AI chatbots and their influence on vulnerable users.
The lawsuit is seeking several measures, including requiring AI systems to end conversations involving self-harm, banning chatbots from presenting themselves as sentient beings, and mandating referrals to crisis support services when users show signs of suicidal thoughts.
Google stated that it has also updated Gemini’s training to prevent the chatbot from acting like a human companion. The AI will avoid simulating emotional intimacy, forming deep personal bonds with users, or encouraging harmful interactions.
The company explained that these changes are part of its broader effort to ensure responsible AI development as more people begin using AI tools in their daily lives.
Google’s philanthropic organization has also committed $30 million over the next three years to support global crisis hotlines and improve mental health assistance.
In addition, the company will invest $4 million in expanding its partnership with ReflexAI, a platform that uses artificial intelligence to train crisis counselors and improve emergency mental health responses.
These investments aim to strengthen global mental health support systems and ensure that people experiencing distress can receive help quickly.
