Microsoft, Google and Amazon confirm that Anthropic’s Claude AI will remain available for businesses despite U.S. defense restrictions. The decision reassures startups and enterprises that they can continue using Claude for commercial tasks like automation, research and productivity tools.
March 6, 2026 — Technology companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have confirmed that the AI model, Claude, which was developed by the AI startup Anthropic, would still remain available to their users for non-defense activities. The confirmation comes after the US Department of Defense added the AI startup to the list of potential risks to the country’s supply chain, following a controversy surrounding the use of artificial intelligence technology for defense.
The confirmation has come as a relief to many startups and companies that have been using the AI technology through the companies’ platforms, such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon. The companies have confirmed that the restrictions only relate to defense-related activities and do not impact the general use of the AI technology.
The problem started when the United States Department of Defense officially declared Anthropic as a “supply-chain risk.” This term is usually used to refer to companies and organizations that may pose a potential threat to the country.
According to available information, the Pentagon had requested more access to Anthropic’s AI technology in order to use the same in the military, such as in surveillance and weapon development. However, the company refused the request as the same may contravene the company’s internal safety and ethical standards concerning the use of artificial intelligence.
Therefore, the Department of Defense announced that their systems will eventually cease using the Claude model. Moreover, the contractors hired directly by the Pentagon are expected to prove that they are not using Anthropic’s technology in defense contracts.
However, despite this move by the government, Microsoft announced that its customers can still use Claude for non-military purposes. The company stated that its legal team analyzed the designation and concluded that it does not affect the company’s ability to provide customers with access to the model for commercial purposes.
It was stated by the company that customers can still access Claude through various platforms, including Microsoft 365, GitHub and Microsoft’s AI Foundry, which is a development environment. It was also stated by the company that they are going to continue their collaboration with Anthropic on projects that are not related to defense applications.
It was also stated by Google that customers can still access Claude through Google Cloud Services. A spokesperson from the company stated that despite the Defense Department’s decision, collaborations with Anthropic for non-defense-related projects are not limited.
It was also stated that customers who use Amazon Web Services can still access Claude for commercial purposes. Therefore, various organizations can still use Claude for their business purposes.
Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, has also criticized this decision by the Defense Department and confirmed that they are going to challenge this decision legally.
Amodei also said that this restriction was only applicable to the direct use of Claude technology in defense contracts. Even companies that are contracted by the Pentagon can still use this technology for their other projects and services, as stated by him.
It should also be noted that despite all these controversies, the use of Claude AI technology is still increasing among various business organizations and developers. Various organizations are using this technology for their content creation, research, automation, and productivity purposes.
It should also be noted that this controversy indicates that there are rising tensions between government organizations that want to use advanced AI technology and technology organizations that are setting limits on how their technology can be used. At present, with confirmations from Microsoft, Google and Amazon, this technology from Anthropic’s Claude can still be utilized for business purposes, despite the controversy between Anthropic and the Defense Department.
